What Does a Direct Service Professional Do?

Every person is different—and thatʼs what makes this job special.

 

Youʼll provide individualized, one-on-one support based on each participantʼs Individual Support Plan (ISP), personal goals, preferences, strengths, and needs.

 

Depending on the individual you support, your day may include:

Building Independence

  • Teaching and reinforcing everyday living skills

  • Helping with meal planning, shopping, budgeting, household routines, and other life skills

  • Encouraging individuals to make choices and become more confident and independent

  • Supporting goals related to independent living, education, volunteering, or employment

Getting Out Into the Community

  • Accompanying individuals to community activities and events

  • Going shopping, to restaurants, parks, libraries, recreational activities, or other places of interest

  • Supporting participation in volunteer opportunities, social activities, and community programs

  • Providing or assisting with transportation when required

  • Helping individuals build relationships and become more connected to their communities

Providing One-on-One Support

  • Offering companionship, encouragement, and positive reinforcement

  • Supporting communication and social skills

  • Following strategies outlined in the participantʼs ISP and other applicable support plans

  • Observing and documenting progress toward individual goals

  • Providing appropriate supervision and promoting health and safety

  • Supporting personal care or daily routines when required by the participantʼs individual needs

  • Able to follow an individualized support plan and document services accurately

Basic Requirements

  • ​Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Must be able to successfully complete required background checks

  • Must meet all training and employment requirements for the position

  • Ability to perform the physical responsibilities associated with the participantʼs individual needs

  • Reliable transportation may be required depending on the assignment

​

Previous experience in direct care, caregiving, behavioral health, human services, education, special education, community support, or working with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities is a plus.
